Defender pondering next move

Despite having only just joined French club Lille on a deal until the end of the season, Portuguese international Ricardo Costa appears almost certain to join Valencia in the summer.

The former Porto defender is out of contract with German champions Wolfsburg at the end of the season, and was the subject of much transfer speculation in January. Costa eventually opted for a six-month loan deal with Lille in order to give himself a platform to win a place in Portugal's World Cup squad.

However, the move to France has always appeared a temporary solution, with La Liga outfit Valencia suspected to be the 28-year-old's preferred long-term destination. Speaking to AS, Costa did little to dampen the growing expectation that he will be playing his football at the Mestalla next season.

"The offer I have that makes me the happiest is one from Valencia for four seasons. Let's say, if I had to choose now, I'd take it. But I have not yet committed to Valencia, I have not signed anything," he told the Spanish daily.

"I will not decide my future until the league finishes in May. It would be disrespectful if I'm playing for another club that has made the effort to sign me and treated me well. In addition, Lille also would like me to stay longer, so I should not sign for another team before then.

"I will fight for the French title. To be champion in another country would be unbelievable. But my dream is to play in the Spanish league - the best in the world - and Valencia is ideal. Portugal Expects

The Portuguese national team supporters surprisingly in the last decade have inherited an attribute that they never had before – high expectations. This fever for perfection was created nearly a decade ago subconsciously by a boost of national talent, a change of mentality, and creativity by the front office.

This all began in 2004 when Portugal hosted their first ever European Championship. The country rallied and cried together, raised the scarf high, and at least for a moment, a small country of about 10 million people believed something magical was brewing. Unfortunately, in the end, we didn't raise the trophy, but the Portuguese national team won something, something that can't be measured by goals, or shots on target – it had won confidence.

Since then, Portugal's expectations have not only been to qualify for major tournaments, but to excel in them. Before this decade Portugal's tournament record was lukewarm at best, with the 1966 World Cup being its only highlight thanks to a brilliant 9-goal performance by Eusebio and a third place finish. I guess Scolari's era did spoil the best of us. Even the country's petulance towards bad results contributed to the often touchy Scolari interviews he had in the media. But I guess it was just a special way of expressing our gratitude.

Fortune and toil

What should be our expectations this summer? Well to tell you the truth, I expect Portugal to pass the group stage but after that we are going to need a little bit of luck and a lot of hard work in order to be successful. Don't worry, I'm definitely not a pessimist, but let's be honest, so far Portugal hasn't been lucky; we had an uneasy draw at the group stage, Pepe's injury is worrisome, and Carlos Queiroz's team still hasn't had a solid starting eleven.

But there is a certain strategic route that is both difficult but effective. The national team, I believe, must strive for a first place finish in the group. I know, I am a bit greedy, but let me explain. If we finish in first place, it means that we play the 2nd place team in Group H. This group consists of Spain, Honduras, Switzerland, and Chile. Any analyst looking at that group can safely put their money on Spain to be winners. And that's why Portugal's first place win in their group is so valuable. It ensures a 2nd round match with hopefully one of the three weaker teams.

Let's face it, playing Brazil and then a European champion Spain, within a four days span can send chills down anybody's back. When is the last time you have seen Portugal play top tier teams, back to back, flawlessly? If we play a Chile or a Switzerland we can have a little more breathing room with the opportunity of later playing a more manageable team from either Group E or F. But in football anything is possible. Injuries and new talent on the rise can always tip the balance, Brazil can drop points against the Ivorians, or maybe Portugal can wiggle through the group stage with a second place finish.

Cabanas was rushed to Los Angeles Pedregal Hospital after the shooting where he underwent emergency surgery under the care of Dr. Ernesto Martinez.
Dr. Martinez held a press conference moments ago to update the public on the Club America striker’s current condition.
"Cabanas arrived in a critical condition with a severe trauma to the cranium. We managed to put him under control but there was also a skin lesion, a clot inside his head," said Martinez.
"We operated on his cranium and stopped the bleeding and the clotting and the brain is in a stable condition.”

Dr. Martinez went on to state that although he was successful in his attempt to stop the clotting, Cabanas’ condition was still grave and that he had a long fight ahead of him.
“The problem of the blood clot has been solved but the gravity of the situation is not over. He is sedated and needs several days before we can withdraw the anaesthesia.
We can not talk about predictions or consequences. We can only hope that his situation remains favourable. Injuries of this type are unclear.
We do not know what kind of consequences the patient may have. That will depend on his progress," he said. Dr. Martinez then stated that the surgery had lasted about seven hours and confirmed that a bullet was still lodged in Cabanas' brain.
"The bullet is not removed. It is in the back of the brain, we would do more damage if we tried to extract it," he said. We cannot assure you that he is out of danger. If he had not been attended to immediately, he would not have survived. He is young and healthy, that helps.
"He arrived at 6 am, we prepared everything and operated on him. The operation began at half past 7 and we finished about 40 minutes ago, meaning the surgery lasted about seven hours."

Dr. Martinez concluded the press conference by stating that he might have to perform a second operation on Cabanas.
"We might have to operate again because we do not know if it will start bleeding. The bullet has not been removed, but his life is of our utmost concern."
"Now, we can only wait. We do not know if he can return to a normal life," he concluded.

Que esperar do Benfica em 2010?

O ano é novo, mas é temporada não. De facto, ja estamos a meio da temporada, e nesta altura do compeonato, aquilo que se esperava, começou a materializar-se, ou não.

Ha uma coisa que os adeptos do Benfica estão habituados a ter. Esperanças. Cada ano, é sempre "Sera desta?" Entenda-se, sera desta que o Benfica consegue recuperar aquilo a que habituou os seus adeptos, ganhar. O benfica durante décadas ganhou muito. Era um grande em Portugal e fora. Era o orgulho de um pais. Mas na ultima década, essa tendência inverteu-se. Foi esvanecêndo perante a forte concurência do Porto, e esporadicamente, do Sporting, e até (lembram-se) do Boavista.

Escândalos financeiros, contratações pouco felizes, e pressão, muita pressão para corresponder à gloria dos avos. Isso foi o dia-a-dia do clube durante anos.

Entrou LFV e muita coisa mudou. Podra não ser perfeito, mas pelo menos saneou as finanças do Benfica, atraiu mas dinheiro para os cofres da luz, globalmente pôs a equipa mais competitiva. Mas apenas um titulo foi ganho.

Para a temporada 2009-2010, contrataram-se craques que os grandes europeus não queriam. Saviola, Aimar, e companhia, no zenite das suas carreiras nunca teriam vindo para o Benfica. Mas aceitaram o convite para relançar a suas carreiras. E ha que dizer que o sutaque argentino esta a dar-se muito bem em Lisboa. Estadio cheio, gloeadas das anticas... Ha quanto tempo benfiquista não via isto?

O Benfica continua em todas as provas, e bem. Podra não ganhar nada, mas o certo é trouxe de volta bom futebol, resultatdos, e o sorriso ao benfiquistas.

Indeed, with the likes of Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal, and North Corea, this group is by far the most impressive of all. North Corea seems a bit out of place in this group, but actually nobody really knows what they are worth. The numbers would say that Brazil and Portugal would go through. But since football isn't always rational, the best would be to say that Brazil, Portugal and Ivory Coast all have an equal chance to make it.

Many people are going to say Brazil is favourite in this group. It's true that Brazil is the spoiled brat of football. Always exceptional players. This country never really declined over the years. Impressive.

But it is also true to say that the gap between Brazil and many teams in the world is not as big as it was before. Brazil has stars, so do Portugal and Ivory Coast. Kaka is no better than Cristiano Ronaldo or Drogba.

Portugal has been having a interresting progression over the past ten years. Since 1996, the national team have been participating in every big competition (except the World Cup 1998). Achieving good results, final at the Euro-2004, and fourth place at the World Cup 2006. It seemed that the departure of Scolari has been hard to deal with, after the team struggled to reach the World Cup final stage. But the current coach, Queiroz, step by step, is managing to input his philosophy to the players. Portugal has an impressive number of international level players, something rare for a country with only 10 millions inhabitants. Portugal has never won any title at a national team level but has been lately a chronic candidate. Maybe their weakness is to have a squad with top players, along with medium ones. The key for Portugal will be to be efficient in the box, and find a safe goal-keeper.

Ivory Coast is a bit like Portugal, great stock of great players., but has lack of results. Ivory Coast has never won any title, even at an african level, depiste having what many consider the best african best. There also, the best is along the ok.

Group G is by far the strongest one, and will force one big fish (since it's pretty unlikely that North Corea would make it) leave the tournament prematurely. Brazil must be careful not be too self-confident, because the opponents are tough, and they look down on the others, they very well could be those going home early.
